TESOROS: PROPOSALS FOR USE BY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

  1. General observations
  2. Tesoros is available in two versions:

    • DVD-ROM (2.6)
    • On-Line (2.7)

It is possible to use Tesoros for studying in three formats to complete an initial course of the Spanish language:

    1. Hybrid format: studying via Internet, with tuition from the teacher and by attending the classroom.
    2. Virtual format: studying via Internet, with tuition from the teacher and without attending the classroom.
    3. Individual format: studying by using the DVD-ROM version and without tuition from a teacher.

Tesoros, in whatever version, complies with the requirements of:

    • The European Framework of Reference for Levels A1 and A2
    • ACTFL for beginner low, medium and high levels.

The recommended workload is approximately 20 hours per lesson, distributed as follows:

    • 2 hours for group instructions
    • 10 hours of individual work
    • 3 hours of group activities in the Chat Room
    • 3 hours of practice
    • 2 hours for consultations

With the exception of the "Chat Room" and the "Discussion Forum" (1), the Tesoros program provides the following elements in the study formats mentioned above:

    1. 15 lessons (plus one of Revision) : each of the 15 units of Tesoros provides the student with the following sections:
    2. a.1) A detective story based on animated cartoons,
a.2) a number of tasks associated with searching for the treasure,
a.3) a presentation of vocabulary and
2.4) a few explanations of grammar with audio recordings.

    3. Comprehension exercises: with every step of the story, the vocabulary and the grammar, the student has to complete a series of comprehension exercises, which they keep for both the teacher and the student (see Automatic Follow-up) . The most creative exercises are found in the homework section.
    4. Writing exercises: from the first lesson, the homework section asks the student to practise writing in Spanish. Then, the final compositions are delivered to the teacher.
    5. A multimedia dictionary: Tesoros On-line provides an ideological dictionary (that is to say, it is organized according to semantic fields such as "hotel", "bank", "doctor", etc.) with more than 5,000 entries, all of which are accompanied by illustrations and phrases with their pronunciation. This type of dictionary is extremely useful when having to write a composition. It can be opened in a separate window.

In the Tesoros DVD-ROM version, the dictionary also lets you search in 5 languages. As an option, you can download it onto a hard disk for consultation regardless of whether you are on-line or not.
    6. Automatic follow-up: by means of SCORM conversion, Tesoros On-line carries out an automatic follow-up of the student's attempts to complete the tasks and the exercises. Exercises are corrected automatically (except the exams) and the result is put at the student and teacher's disposal (except the self-evaluations).
    7. Discussion Forum: All e-learning platforms have some type of Discussion Forum.
    8. Chat Room: the Tesoros On-line version lets you open a new window where both the students and the teacher can communicate live (synchronous chat) interchanging text, voice and video. This tool is accompanied by a wiki where it is possible to write in collaboration. The Chat Room lets the student practise his or her pronunciation and their capacity to speak via virtual format.
The idea of the Chat Room is so that a teacher can arrange a meeting with a maximum of 4 students, and have 3 work rooms available:

      •  Meeting Room:
Place to hold videoconferences between the attendees, as well as chat and wiki (collaborative writing)
      •  Debate Room:
Place where videoconferences have been eliminated, but where you can interchange text (chat and wiki) and voice.
      •  Presentation Room:
Area where "master classes" either live or recorded are provided, as well as video presentations.

In all the Rooms, the attendees have areas available where they can upload Internet addresses and files onto their computers.
    9. Self-evaluations and Exams: at the end of every unit, the student is offered a series of Self-evaluations grouped according to the different sections of every lesson, so that the knowledge acquired can be checked and the student can carry out as many tests as deemed necessary, before sitting the Exam.
The Tesoros DVD-ROM version offers the teacher the possibility of downloading free the self-evaluations and examinations in PDF format from our Web Server.

  3. Using Tesoros On-Line i n hybrid format (classroom + Internet)
  4. Teaching with material multimedia is not intuitive. Lessons have to be planned beforehand. We give below an idea of a 6-day cycle, one lesson; and the corresponding pace so that the student can take maximum advantage of Tesoros in this study format.

    Day 1

    In the classroom.
    Preliminary activities.

    • The teacher presents the general ideas of The story of the lesson.
    • The teacher presents the active vocabulary of the lesson.
    • Students carry out some of the activities related to the main topics of the lesson.

    Day 2

    At home.

    • The students listen and read The story of the corresponding lesson.
    • They do the comprehension exercises of The story .
    • They listen and read The grammar of the lesson.
    • In the Chat Room, the students and the teacher talk about The story.

    • Preparing the composition in groups.
    • The teacher presents preliminary activities for the following lesson.

    Day 6

    At home.

    • The students do the Self-evaluations of the story, the vocabulary and the grammar.
  5. Using Tesoros On-Line in virtual format (Internet plus teacher)
  6. When using this study format, the teacher will have to use the Discussion Forum on the E-Learning platform and the Tesoros Chat Room more intensely, so that the students work not only with him but also with other virtual companions.

The previous 6-day cycle is valid in this format, but the "classroom" days are replaced with a more ample use of the available communication tools. The Chat Room can be used for live formal presentations with text, voice and video.

The teacher will have to dedicate a few hours exclusively for "tutorials" (office hours), to answer the students' questions.

    Day 1

    In the Chat Room.

    • In the Chat Room, the students and the teacher talk about the topics in the lesson; the students prepare the topics of The tasks section and begin to think about a composition (very basic for lesson 1)

    Day 5

    In the Chat Room.

    • Preparing The tasks activities .
    • Preparing the composition in groups.
    • The teacher presents preliminary activities for the following lesson.

    Day 6

    At home.

    • The students do the Self-evaluations of the story, the vocabulary and the grammar.
  7. Using Tesoros in individual format (DVD-ROM version and without a teacher)
  8. On the one hand, this has the advantage of leaving the student with absolute freedom to find his or her work pace. On the other hand, the disadvantage is that there is no contact with either a teacher or a group of students with whom the student can communicate, practise and share impressions.
Although the student has the option to study the lesson in whatever order he or she chooses, we suggest the basic pace of a 5-day lesson is followed.

    Day 1

    Preliminary activities.

    • The student examines the story of the lesson.
    • The student practises the active vocabulary of the lesson.

    Day 2

    • The student listens and reads The story of the relevant lesson.
    • He or she does the comprehension exercises of The story .
    • The student listens and reads The grammar of the lesson.

    Day 3

    • Revision of The story.
    • Revision of The grammar.
    • Work with The vocabulary.

    Day 4

    • The student does The grammar exercises.

    Day 5

    • The student does The tasks.

    (1) The "Discussion Forum" is an inherent tool in E-Learning Platforms and therefore it is not included in the On-line Tesoros program.
